Osvaldo Torres' two-run home run in the third inning gave Bethune-Cookman the early lead and got a stellar outing from its pitching staff as the Wildcats came away with a 3-1 win over the JU baseball team on Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium.

The Wildcats (29-17) pounded out nine hits in the first six innings, with Justin Hoyte, Drew Clark and Pat Jones getting two hits each.

The JU baseball team fell behind early and was never able to recover at Stetson took the rubber game of the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series, 14-4.

The Hatters put up four in the first and followed with three in the second to take control of the game as they went through three pitchers in the first four innings.

Andy Mauldin threw a complete game five-hitter to lead Stetson to a 6-3 win over JU in the nightcap of an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader at Conrad Park.

Mauldin's (5-1) only blemish was a three-run fourth inning as JU rallied to cut a 4-0 deficit to one. He struck out five and walked two.

"You have to credit to Stetson for the way they came out in the first inning to take the lead," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We've got to come out tomorrow and play consistently for nine innings if we want to win this series."

Dolphins awaken in time to top Stetson, 9-6

In the first six innings of the first game of a doubleheader against Stetson, the JU baseball team looked like it was on life support at the plate.

But nine runs on 10 hits in the seventh and eighth innings propelled the Dolphins back from a 4-0 deficit for a 9-6 win at Conrad Park.

Chuck Opachich's one-out single through the left side drove in Matt Lopez and Tony Bernazard to give the Dolphins' their first lead of the day - capping a six-run eighth inning in which JU pounded out seven hits.

Baseball heads to Stetson for A-Sun series

The JU baseball team looks to break out of its slump in Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend as they face in-state rival Stetson in a key three-game series.

The Dolphins (22-18, 11-13 A-Sun) are looking to snap a five-game losing streak in league play.

"This has been a tough week of prepartion as we are in the middle of finals," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "But, this is a big series against an in-state rival on the road, so our guys will be ready to play this weekend."
