Men's basketball signs three for next season

After an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference title game last season, JU head men's basketball coach Cliff Warren continues to load up on talent.

On Wednesday, Warren announced the signing of three players to join the squad for next season - giving the Dolphins depth in the post, more athleticism and scoring ability.

Tevin Galvin (Palm Coast, Fla.), Will Alston (Laurel, Md.) and Chris Edwards (Albany, Ga.) will come to JU next season as the Dolphins look to build off of last season's success.

"We're excited about bringing these three young men into our program," Warren said. "Each one fits the mold of the type of student-athlete we want while fulfilling some of our needs."

Three years ago, Cliff Warren took controlof the men's basketball programat Jacksonville University. With hisarrival, he brought a renewed passionand sense of hope for a once-proudprogram that had been trampled uponduring the previous 20 years.

With the momentum of a young,fresh face leading the program,along with a new administration andreturning fan base, there were hopesthat Warren would have a "Midastouch" with the program.

While the JU men's basketball team was succeeding on the court this past season, the recent alumni were faring quite well too.

Five former Dolphins played overseas this season, playing Finland, Germany, Holland, Cyrpus and Columbia.

"It is great for these young men to get the opportunity to continue to play basketball at the professional level and travel the world," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "This is an exciting time in their lives and they are enjoying these chances to play basketball for a living."

The youth of JU men's basketball team faced the experience of Belmont in the finals of the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Saturday.

The Bruins experience on the biggest stage in the conference showed as the Dolphins fell to a barrage of 3-pointers in their first appearance in a league title game since 1989, 79-61, sending Belmont to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.

While the ending of the season is disappointing, it is safe to say the Dolphins are back after winning one game two years ago to being one game away from the NCAA Tournament.

JU looking to dance on Saturday

The JU men's and women's basketball teams look to punch their tickets for the Big Dance on Saturday in a pair of title games in the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

The women's team will face top-seeded ETSU in the championship game at 2 p.m. (ET), with the game being televised on Comcast Sports Southeast.

The men's team will make its first nationally televised appearance since the 1989 Sun Belt Conference championship game. The Dolphins matchup against top-seeded Belmont is set for 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2.

Both games will be broadcast on the radio on 1010XL, with Barry Milligan and Artis Gilmore calling the action.

Men's hoops run into championship game, ousting Gardner-Webb

The JU men's basketball team jumped out early and never looked back, earning a spot in the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference championship game with an 89-80 win over Gardner-Webb.

Ben Smith led three Dolphins in double figures with 27 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 13-of-17 from the free throw line.

The Dolphins (18-12) got a double-double from Marcus Allen, his sixth of the season. The junior center scored 17 points and pulled down 11 boards, knocking down 11-of-14 from the free throw line.

"This is just another step in the process," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "We've made two of the three steps we wanted to take, but we know that we haven't won anything yet."

JU set for semifinal battles on Friday

That is the mantra for every basketball team during tournament time and for the JU men's and women's basketball teams that was the case on Wednesday as the Dolphins sent both teams into the semifinals.

Both teams will look to secure a place in the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament title game on Friday. The JU women will tipoff against No. 3 seed Gardner-Webb at 1 p.m. (ET), with the men's team facing No. 6 seed Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. (ET).

Men's hoops advances to semifinals with 65-57 win

There is an old saying that it is tough to beat a team three times in one season.

That saying never proved to be more true, but the JU men's basketball team was able to withstand a tough test and an off-shooting night to advance to the semifinals of the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament with a 65-57 win over Mercer.

Marcus Allen scored a game-high 19 points and had nine rebounds to lead three Dolphins (17-12) in double figures. Ben Smith added 17 points, four assists and four steals with Aric Brooks coming off the bench to score 12 points, a new season high for the freshman.

March Madness starts for JU on Wednesday

March Madness begins for the JU men's and women's basketball programs on Wednesday as they open the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Lipscomb's Allen Arena.

The women's team will get the tournament started at 1 p.m. (EST) against No. 7 seed Stetson, with the men's team tipping off 30 minutes after that against No. 7 seed Mercer.

Two Dolphins earn all-conference recognition

Sophomore point guard Ben Smith and freshman forward Ayron Hardy received all-Atlantic Sun Conference recognition on Tuesday from the league's coaches.

Smith, the team's leader in scoring, steals and assists, was named first team all-conference. His award marks the second straight year JU has been represented on the first team as Jesse Kimbrough was selected a year ago.

Hardy was named to the all-freshman team after an impressive season that saw him average almost eight points per game and five rebounds. His selection gives JU four all-freshman team honorees in Cliff Warren's three years as head coach.

Can't afford the plane ticket to catch the JU men's and women's basketball teams chasing an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament title?

That is not a problem anymore as ASun.TV will provide live coverage of all the action of the A-Sun Tournament.

To top off the coverage, the semifinals of the men's bracket will be broadcast live on Comcast Sports Southeast on Friday night. The championship game for the women will be shown live on CSS on Saturday afternoon, with men's championship game to be shown on ESPN2 that evening.

Men's hoops drops regular season finale at Stetson, 81-64

After a red-hot shooting night on Thursday, the JU men's basketball team couldn't find the range on Saturday, falling at Stetson, 81-64, in Atlantic Sun Conference action.

Stetson (16-15, 11-5 A-Sun) avenged its loss to the Dolphins (16-12, 12-4 A-Sun) in the opening weekend of conference play when JU rallied in the final minute before winning in triple overtime.

The Hatters got a game-high 23 points from A.J. Smith, hitting two of Stetson's 11 3-pointers. Stetson had three other players in double figures with Garfield Blair adding 15, along with Eric Diaz and Tim Lang chipping in with 13 each.
