Winston Neal begins his third season as an assistant coach for the Dolphins and is responsible for handling team travel, coordinating JU's recruiting efforts, working post players and advance scouting. In his first full year as the recruiting coordinator, Neal helped pull in seven recruits - all of which will push for playing time. Neal comes to JU after working as director of basketball operations for the University of Southern California men's basketball team.
"Winston is extremely intelligent and creative," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "His creative ideas and fresh thinking will be an important part of our development process." At USC, Neal was in charge of many key facets of the Trojans' program, including the planning of all team travel as well as managing all of the Trojans' Summer Basketball camps and winter clinics. He was also involved in planning and coordinating all recruiting visits on campus. Neal implemented individual player workouts for guards and post players. He also was in charge of the film breakdown and teaching sessions for the guards and forwards. Under Neal's guidance, freshman point guard Gabe Pruitt earned a spot on the Pac-10 all-freshman team and Nick Young earned honoroable mention Pac-10 all-freshman team honors. Before USC, Neal started his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at Loyola Marymount for two seasons. He was responsible for preseason and postseason workouts, player development and recruiting. Neal helped develop forward Sherman Gray into the WCC All-Conference and Defensive "Player of the Year" honoree. Before Neal started his coaching career, he was a four-year letter winner for the Georgia Tech men's basketball team from 1998-2002. Neal played under current Dolphins head coach Cliff Warren while he was an assistant at Tech. He served as the Yellow Jackets team captain in his senior season and was a two-time Scholar Athlete Award recipient, while also being named to the ACC Academic honor roll for three consecutive seasons (1999-2001). Neal earned the Iron Athlete Award in his first three seasons at Georgia Tech. Neal received his bachelor's degree in management from Georgia Tech in 2002. In 2004, Neal earned his master's degree from Loyola Marymount in business administration. Neal is single and resides in Jacksonville. |
