Men's golf wins Braveheart Classic by nine over UCLA

March 6, 2007

Final Results

BEAUMONT, Calif. - The Jacksonville men's golf team overcame a two-stroke deficit in the final round to upset UCLA with a nine-stroke victory to claim the Braveheart Classic on the par-72 Oak Valley Golf Club.

The Dolphins finished the second round early on Tuesday morning and trailed the Bruins by two. In the final round, JU posted a one-over par total of 289 to race past UCLA's final round of 300.

Matt Kleinrock led the charge in the final round to win his first collegiate title. The junior opened the tournament with a 78, but rallied with round of 73 and 69 to win the individual title at four-over par 220.

The Dolphins claimed the top three spots in the individual competition - with Russell Knox taking second and Duncan Stewart finishing in third.

"This was a great effort from our entire team to come back to beat a team like UCLA," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "Matt got off to a rocky start, but kept working hard and found a way to score well which rubbed off on everybody."

The Dolphins carded a round of 312 in the first round, made up two shots in the second round with a total of 295 and carded the best round of the day in the final round to finish off the rally.

Knox opened the tournament with a 77 before closing with round of 75 and 71 to finish three shots back of Kleinrock in the individual competition at seven-over par 223.

Stewart finished in the top five for the fourth time this season with a total of eight-over par 224. He opened the tournament with a 77 before finishing strong with rounds of 72 and 75.

Jamie Kennedy just missed a top 20 finish with a total of 232. Kennedy opened with an 81, but righted the ship with rounds of 75 and 76.

Joshua Kinsey also turned his tournament around after a tough opening round. Kinsey carded an 80 in the first round, improved with a 79 in the second round and closed with a 74 to finish in a tie for 24th.

The Dolphins are back in action on March 19th at the Kennesaw Spring Invitational.
