Matt Gilman receives "Player of the Week" honors

Oct. 29, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After keeping two shutouts against Lipscomb and Belmont that clinched the Dolphins first ever A-Sun Championship, men's soccer freshman goalkeeper Matt Gilman was named A-Sun Defensive "Player of the Week" and Community First "Athlete of the Week".

Gilman made eight saves in both of the Dolphins victories - a 3-0 win over Lipscomb on Friday and a 2-0 decision over Belmont on Sunday.

"We are all very proud of Matt and the way he stepped up this year and performed huge in conference play," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "This is his third honor and it is well deserved, because he has played a big part in our regular season championship. Hopefully, he will continue to play well down the stretch and help us win the A-Sun tournament."

With the two victories, Gilman improves his record on the season to 5-4-1. His four shutouts are tied for second in the A-Sun, his goals against average (1.28) is fifth and his saves per game average (3.58) is tied for sixth best.

Gilman now has been named A-Sun Defensive "Player of the Week" on three occasions this season, having previously earning the honor on Sept. 4 and Oct. 15, which ties the A-Sun record. Mercer's Aldo Balsano won three in 2005.

The Dolphins will be in action again on Saturday with a non-conference regular season home finale Flagler on Senior Day at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
