Men's tennis upset by Gardner-Webb, 4-1

A few weeks ago, the JU men's tennis staged an epic 4-3 win at Gardner-Webb to clinch the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

On Friday night, the Bulldogs got revenge by ending the Dolphins' season with a 4-1 win in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament.

"We're disappointed with how this turned out, but I don't want it to dampen the progress that we've made this season," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "I hope our guys remember this feeling and use it as motivation to make a deep run in the tournament next season."

Four Dolphins earn all-conference honors in tennis

Lina Xu was named the Atlantic Sun Conference "Freshman of the Year" as the JU men's and women's tennis teams had four players earn all-conference honors.

Xu becomes the second Dolphin to be named "Freshman of the Year," as she matches assistant coach Emese Sulyos in earning the honor for JU.

Senior Lena Willi earned first team all-conference honors for the third straight year and has been named to the all-conference teams all four years. Willi also equals Sulyos' record of being named to the all-conference teams for four straight year.

Men's tennis looks to make run at the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament

The JU men's tennis looks to continue its rebuilding process this weekend as the Dolphins look to make a run in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament.

JU (7-12, 5-5 A-Sun) enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed and faces No. 5 seed Gardner-Webb in the first round. The winner will face top-seeded and host East Tennessee State in the semifinals.

"We've played a tough schedule and we weren't one of the deeper teams in the conferece, but we competed in every match," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "The guys felt that they could win every match, especially against some good teams like FAU and USF. We were able to get some wins against some of those teams. With that experience, it will help our confidence as they become juniors and seniors."

Men's tennis defeats Bethune-Cookman, 5-2

The JU men's tennis team ended its regular season on a high note with a 5-2 win over Bethune-Cookman on Monday afternoon at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

JU (8-12) got the doubles point and four wins in singles play, all in straight sets.

"We played well today and it was a good confidence booster for us heading into the tournament," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We're going to fine tune some things over the next few days to have us ready to play our best tennis of the year at the conference tournament."

Men's tennis falls to UCF in regular season finale, 6-1

The JU men's tennis fell 6-1 home at UCF on Saturday in its regular-season finale.

Victor Vaz was the bright spot for the Dolphins, picking up a 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 win in the No. 2 match for the Dolphins only point.

"We played a very good team and this was good preparation for the conference tournament," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "Victor stepped up today and rallied for a big win for us. We're looking forward to a good week of preparation for a run in the tournament."

The JU men's tennis team wrapped up its Atlantic Sun Conference regular season schedule with a 6-1 loss to North Florida in the SunTrust River City Rumble on Tuesday at UNF.

Francisco Riveroll was the bright spot for the Dolphins, winning the No. 3 match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

"This was a tough match and while we're disappointed with the result, we've got to shake it off quickly and get ready for the tournament next week," said head coach Shane Wood.

The JU men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Winthrop on Wednesday in their only midweek match.

The Dolphins (4-8) match against Oklahoma was cancelled as the Sooners were unable to leave Norman and will not be rescheduled.

"We're making progress each time out," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "Winthrop is a good team and it was a good test for us. Hopefully we're learning from each match as we head down the stretch."

After snapping a three-match losing streak, the JU men's tennis team returns to the court on Wednesday to face Winthrop.

First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

JU enters its non-conference match having snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-3 win at Gardner-Webb on Sunday.

The Dolphins (4-7, 3-2 A-Sun) won the doubles point in thrilling fashion to cap the match after the two teams had split the six singles matches.

JU won the doubles point and won five of the six singles matches, two of those going three sets.

The Dolphins picked up all three doubles matches and sealed the match with all six singles wins. In the six singles matches, JU dropped just 15 games.
