Jim Taketa resigns as head men's and women's golf coach

Jim Taketa has resigned as head men's and women's golf coach at Jacksonville University on Tuesday to spend more time with his family business interests.

In his four years as head coach, Taketa oversaw the men's program's first NCAA Regional appearance and Atlantic Sun Conference title in 2006. In 2005, Duncan Stewart represented JU as an individual at the NCAA East Regional and in 2007, both Stewart and All-America Russell Knox competed at the NCAA East Regional.

Women's golf takes fifth at the A-Sun Championship

Therese Karlsson shot an eight-over par 80 in the final round to tie for 14th as the JU women's golf team season came to a conclusion with a fifth place finish at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship.

Played on the par-72 Ridges Country Club, the Dolphins carded a 329 in the final round and just missed tying Stetson for fourth by two shots.

The JU Athletic Association is holding a drawing that would fulfill many golfers' dreams. All the proceeds from the drawing will go to support JU athletics and its student-athletes.

With the purchase of a $40 ticket, you could win a trip for two to the Carlsbad, Calif., and a day at the Callaway Golf Learning Facility - with time for instruction, including video, as well as a custom fitting for a new set of Callaway irons and woods.

Women's golf in fifth entering the final round of the A-Sun Championship

Tough scoring conditions were the story of the second round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship as the JU women's golf team sits in fifth place entering the final round.

The Dolphins posted a team score of 333 in the second round, tying for the high score of the day. The Dolphins hold a seven-shot lead on Mercer and trail Stetson by seven for fourth place.

Host East Tennessee State has a comfortable 28-shot lead entering the final round after posting a 299 - the lowest score of the day. Belmont's Lorie Warren shot a three-under par 69 to take the individual lead by two shots at three-over par after 36 holes.

Cold, wind and snow do not make ideal conditions for golfing.

But the JU women's golf team was able to battle through the less than ideal scoring setup to post a round of 324 and sit in fifth place after the first round of the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship.

Green's eight-over par 80 led the Dolphins on the par-72 Ridges Country Club as only nine players were able to break 80 amid the treacherous conditions.

On Monday, the JU women's golf team will begins its quest for history.

The Dolphins open the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the Ridges Golf Country Club seeking the first conference title in program history.

The conditions that JU and the rest of the field will face will be tough. Cold, wind and rain are all in the forecast for Monday's round, which will add to the test facing the teams of hard and fast greens.

Danielle Gibb wins Diet Coke Wofford Invitational

Danielle Gibb didn't even have to hit a shot on Tuesday to win the Diet Coke Wofford Invitational.

The JU freshman carded a one-over par 73 in the opening round and with the tournament shortened due to weather, she was declared the individual champion of the event.

The Dolphins finished in a tie for fourth place with James Madison after shooting a 322 in the only round. Elon won the nine-team event with a 307.

Freshman Danielle Gibb fired a one-over par 73 to lead the JU women's golf team to a tie for fourth after the first round of the Diet Coke Wofford Invitational.

Gibb's round broke her season best and gave her a two-shot lead heading into the final round, that began later on Monday due to possible inclement weather on Tuesday. Gibb's closest pursuer is Samantha Widmer of Elon with six others trailing by three.

Alexandra Andersen posted the best round of the day for JU women's golf team, shooting a six-over par 78 as the Dolphins finished in fourth place at inaugural JU Invitational at Windsor Parke.

Belmont won the team title, posting a 309 in the final round to finish at 617 and defeated Daytona Beach Community College by eight shots.

Lorie Warren of Belmont had the only round under par of the event, carding a three-under par 69 to seal the individual title at three-under par, 141. She won the individual title by 14 shots over a four-way tie of Danielle Jackson (Stetson), Ashley Kozlowski (Stetson), Chelsea Harris (Austin Peay) and Melissa Magdor (Daytona Beach).

Danielle Gibb fired a five-over par 77 to finish in a tie for fourth to lead the JU women's golf team in the inaugural JU Invitational.

Gibb, coming off the first top 20 finish of her collegiate career, led the Dolphins to fifth place in the five-team competition after a round of 322 at the par-72 Windsor Parke Golf Club.

Belmont leads the team competition after posting a 308 in the first round. Belmont's Lorie Warren carded an even-par 72 to lead the individual competition.

The JU women's golf team will host the inaugural JU Invitational at Windsor Parke, starting with 18 holes on Monday.

The Dolphins will tee it up in the 36-hole event with Atlantic Sun Conference rivals Belmont and Stetson, as well as Austin Peay and Daytona Beach Community College.

JU will go off in the final wave with Stetson and Daytona Beach CC, current NJCAA National Champions, as the first Dolphin going to the first tee at 8:12 a.m.

Danielle Gibb carded an 84 in the second round to finish in a tie for 13th in leading the JU women's golf team to a sixth place finish at the Lady Braveheart Challenge.

The Dolphins posted a second round 332, up seven shots from the 325 in the first round to finish at 657 in the 16-team event.

Cal Poly won the team title with a 36-hole total of 629. Cal Poly's Stephanie Yocum won the individual title with rounds of 75 and 76 to finish at seven-over par, 151.

The JU men's and women's golf teams had Christmas come a little late this year.

The Dolphins have added a new home course to their stable - the prestigious Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass, home of THE PLAYERS.

"This was a great opportunity for golf programs to get one of the finest, if not the finest, facilities in the world," said JU director of athletics Alan Verlander. "Our student-athletes now have access to one of the premier golfing venues, which will give them the opportunity to hone their game on a tough layout as well as a great practice facility."
