Danielle Gibb wins Diet Coke Wofford Invitational
March 4, 2008
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Danielle Gibb didn't even have to hit a shot on Tuesday to win the Diet Coke Wofford Invitational. The JU freshman carded a one-over par 73 in the opening round and with the tournament shortened due to weather, she was declared the individual champion of the event. The Dolphins finished in a tie for fourth place with James Madison after shooting a 322 in the only round. Elon won the nine-team event with a 307. Gibb becomes the first Dolphin to win an individual title since Ashley Grier in 2004. Her 73 is tied for the fifth on the school's all-time low round list. "Danielle has been playing at a high level this spring and while we would have liked to finish the tournament, it is still a great experience for her in getting the win," said JU women's assistant coach Pamela Shelley. "She has a lot of talent and a great work ethic, which will lead to her being in contention a lot in the coming years." Her one-over par round marked the third time this year a Dolphin has shot 73 or better this season. Therese Karlsson posted a school-record 71 in the second round of the Great Smokies Women's Collegiate and Heather Fudge shot a 73 in that round as well. The Dolphins return to the links on March 28 at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla. |
