Women's tennis falls to Florida, 4-0

For the second straight year, the JU women's tennis faced a Florida team that was ranked among the best in the country in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the result was similar as JU dropped a 4-0 decision to the sixth-ranked Gators at the Ring Tennis Complex on Tuesday night.

"I thought the girls played well," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We really fought through every court which was the goal that we had planned for ourselves. Playing a nationally ranked program, I thought the team followed through really well."

Women's tennis set for Florida on Friday

A practice outing at the Ring Tennis Complex on Thursday wrapped up the JU women's tennis team's preparations for the NCAA Tournament.

The Dolphins (20-5) face the daunting task of playing No. 6 Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The two teams faced off in the first round of the NCAAs a year ago, with the Gators advancing with a 4-0 win.

"We had a good practice today and the girls are loose," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We are going to come out tomorrow with nothing to lose and play as well as we can against one of the top teams in the country.

Women's tennis wants more out of NCAA trip

A year ago, the JU women's tennis team made its first postseason appearance.

Now, the Dolphins return to the biggest stage in college tennis for another shot at glory and being satisfied with being in the field isn't an option.

Jacksonville (20-5) faces sixth-ranked Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in Gainesville, Fla. The two teams faced off in the first round last season, with the Gators advancing with an impressive 4-0 win.

With a second-straight Atlantic Sun Conference championship trophy in tow, the JU women's tennis team will make the trek to Gainesville to face the No.6 seed Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Joining JU and Florida in the Gainesville regional will be Ohio State and Auburn, who will face off in the first round on Friday, May 9. The winners of each match will face off for the right to go to the national championships on May 10.

"Obviously it's a tough draw, but we're excited to be in the tournament," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "Having played Florida last year in the tournament, we want to build off of that experience and make it a little more challenging match."

Women's tennis to celebrate title on Tuesday at the Regency Alehouse

With final exams in the rearview window, the JU women's tennis team will celebrate its second straight Atlantic Sun Conference title on Tuesday.

The celebration is open to the public at the Regency Alehouse as the team will be there at 2 p.m., with the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

"We're excited about being apart of the NCAA Tournament and playing in the regionals," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We're working hard to be ready for whoever the committee matches us up against."

The JU women's tennis team picked up its second straight Atlantic Sun Conference championship on Sunday afternoon, knocking off host and second seed East Tennessee State, 4-2.

With the win, the Dolphins (20-5) advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season while also racking up their second straight 20-win campaign.

"I'm so proud of these young ladies and what they have accomplished," said JU head coach Shane Wood, who was able to guide the Dolphins back to the title in his first season at the helm. "This group played so well as a team and our chemistry was really strong all season.

"Everyone on the team was a contributor this week in winning the title. Now, we're going to get ready for the NCAA Tournament and seeing what we can do against the best in the country."

Women's tennis advances to A-Sun championship match

It took awhile, but the JU women's team shutout Campbell 4-0 to advance the Atlantic Sun Conference championship match for the second straight season.

The match was delayed by rain and took more than five hours to complete as they dodged the rain drops before the final result.

"I'm really proud of how focused the girls stayed throughout everything," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "They knew what was on the line today and stepped up their game."

The JU women's tennis team was all business on Thursday in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

The top-seeded Dolphins came out focused on the task at hand and beat eight-seeded Lipscomb, 5-0, to advance to the semifinals to face the winner of the Gardner-Webb/Campbell match.

Four Dolphins earn all-conference honors in tennis

Lina Xu was named the Atlantic Sun Conference "Freshman of the Year" as the JU men's and women's tennis teams had four players earn all-conference honors.

Xu becomes the second Dolphin to be named "Freshman of the Year," as she matches assistant coach Emese Sulyos in earning the honor for JU.

Senior Lena Willi earned first team all-conference honors for the third straight year and has been named to the all-conference teams all four years. Willi also equals Sulyos' record of being named to the all-conference teams for four straight year.

Women's tennis set to defend tournament title

A year ago, the JU women's tennis team came here to show that its Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title was not a fluke.

This year, they return as the hunted - defending tournament champions - and looking to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

"We are excited about going to the tournament and the opportunity to defend the title," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We've had a great run at the end of the season and everyone is playing at a high level right now. The great thing is we know what we have to do to be successful and last year's experience is a major help."

The JU women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday, knocking off Bethune-Cookman 6-1 at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

Playing the final home match of her career, senior Lena Willi went out in style with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match as the Dolphins (17-4) won their fifth straight match and 13th in their last 14.

"This was a great way to finish the regular season as we get ready for the conference tournament next week," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "I'm glad that Lena was able to finish her career at home with a win in such a dominating fashion. She's been such an important part of our success this season that it was a great way for her to wrap up her collegiate career."

Women's tennis knocks off UNF in SunTrust River City Rumble

The JU women's tennis team snapped its two match losing streak against North Florida on Tuesday, knocking off the Ospreys 5-2 in the SunTrust River City Rumble to wrap up the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule.

JU (16-4, 10-1 A-Sun) won two of three doubles matches and dominated the top four spots in singles to seal the win.

"This was a great win for us," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We battled to win the doubles point and our top four did their job in singles."

The JU women's tennis team saw its seven-match winning streak come to an end as the Dolphins split a pair of matches this week.

JU (11-4) lost to Oklahoma, 6-1, on Wednesday before returning to form with a 6-1 win over Winthrop on Thursday.

"I'm glad with how we responded today after a tough match against Oklahoma," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We're continuing to get better each time out and like how we're competing for every point."
